"Eat your vegetables!"...
That's what my mom used to yelled at me during dinner. Dad would just smiled.
Once mom caught dad smiling, she'll give dad the look. And dad...normally give in and says:
"Listen to your mom."
Well... that's what always happens at the dinner table.
Until today, that reminder always been stuck in my tick scull for the last 26 years. Even when I'm having my lunch and dinner alone, flash back of mom's yelling is always there.
Sometimes, I'll be smiling about it in front of my dinner without realizing people around are looking at me in a restaurant. I guess they might be wondering what is wrong with me.
Memories during childhood are such treasured moments. That's a fact i can't deny. To be honest, I started appreciate all of my parents advice when I moved out to this hectic city....Kuala Lumpur.
Being for from family really makes me miss them. Thanks mom and yes, I do miss you and dad. So, please keep on nagging...and dad, you better hide that sweet smile.... haha.
As i remember, mom used to plant her on vegetables in a row of pots and also around our house compound.
She's will spend few hours a day in the evening pulling out the weed, putting cow dung and pouring collected rain water.
Yes.. your eyes didn't fool you. It COW DUNG. In Malay, we called it tahi lembu.
Where mom got such 'material,'.... its from a Benggali guy. I really can't recall his face but he's surely a hardworking person.
One big sack of cow dug mix with some black soil were sold at a price of RM4. That Benggali guy would carry that sack on his bicycle and deliver to out house.
From what mom told me, he's has a herd of cows. That's where he got the dung. Okay, enough of cow's crap....
Vegetables were fresh at our dinner table. Sawi, bayam, bendi, kucai, terung, tomatoes, chilies even some ulam are planted by mom. Not forgetting the daun kari tree and the pandans.
Mom's hard work did reduced the family expenditures when we're young. Only need to go to the morning market for certain veggies.
In Kuala Lumpur, I need to pay for the veggies. Living in an apartment with such limited space, there's not much room to plant anything. I'm surrounded with bricks!
Plus, my working hours and laziness is another factor drive me to fork out money just to have some veggie.
Vegetables is not so cheap in Kuala Lumpur. And most of it uses a lot of chemicals...just to enhance the growth...making it last longer...and we're eating it. Kinda miss the cow dung...
Organic vegetables? Yup... they have it here but it's not cheap. If you can afford it, why not? Me...salary and the cost of living...well you can guess the rest of story.
Sometimes...I do miss a healthy meal. Fast food is another culture among teens and working people in big cities. Even working families do dine out at night at fast food restaurant.
Is it safe for me to say ...home cook meal is becoming a rare thing now days. You're lucky if you still can enjoy home cook meals and a balance diet at home. Enjoy it!
I miss my dinner moments at home.....
